McCOOK Neb. - When Angie Sovereign came back to McCook for her dad’s birthday, she expected a week of family time, fishing, and showing her kids the parks she grew up with. Instead, a trip to Barnett Park left her feeling disappointed — litter scattered in the grass, trash in the water, and only a few dumpsters placed far apart.
She still has great memories of the park from her childhood, so rather than just feeling frustrated, she decided to act. Angie picked up trash during her visit, but she also started a month-long “August Challenge” on Facebook to encourage others to help keep the park clean.
Her advice is simple: bring a sack and hand sanitizer when you head to the park. Picking up even a few pieces of litter makes a difference.
“I kept walking by the same piece of trash all week,” she said. “Finally I thought, if not me, then who?”
The challenge is open to anyone. Locals can help at Barnett Park, while those living elsewhere can clean up a public space in their own community and share a photo. Tag a friend to join in, and let’s keep our public spaces beautiful for families and wildlife alike.
Many hands make light work — and a cleaner McCook.
