McCook Neb.- The City of McCook is embarking on a transformative project: a proposed $15 million sports complex aimed at boosting recreational opportunities, attracting sports tourism, and stimulating local economic growth.  This initiative, discussed at recent community meetings led by Mammoth Sports Construction and The Sports Facilities Company of Clearwater, Fla, promises to reshape the city's landscape and enhance the quality of life for its residents.

A Hub for Sports and Community

The complex, planned for a strategic location near Q Street and Highway 83, will feature eight fields: two multi-purpose fields, four "quad fields" (four fields grouped together), and two championship fields for softball and baseball.  Seth Soto, Civil Engineering Manager from Mammoth Sports Construction, emphasized the company's commitment to creating inclusive community spaces.  The project aims to recapture the spirit of local traditions, like Friday night football, while offering a modern, state-of-the-art facility for a wider range of sports and activities.

Beyond the Fields: Development and Growth

The sports complex is envisioned as a catalyst for broader development in the area.  McCook City Manager Nate Schneider explained, "If you look at McCook, McCook is going to grow to the north. You can't go to the South because it's in a flood plain. On the east and west side, you've got issues. But if you look at the north, that's nice and flat, it's developable ground. I always look at McCook from road 719 to the south, and you can see all the future development potential.”  The development plan includes surrounding commercial and residential areas, integrated with green spaces for stormwater management and sustainable infrastructure.

Charlie McPherson, Director of the McCook Economic Development, shared the excitement surrounding the project: “We have some outside groups that are interested in statistics and doing some residential and multi-family options, as well as some consultants that are in the retail and commercial side. So, we're really excited.”  This potential for commercial growth resonated with community members. One attendee expressed, “I am so deeply excited about that retail space. That retail piece is so essential for our community,” citing personal difficulties in finding suitable office space as an example.  Other attendees mentioned the importance of the project for workforce development, attracting new residents, and bolstering existing retail businesses.

Facilities, Infrastructure, and Future Expansion

The initial phase of the complex will include essential amenities like a maintenance building, concessions, restrooms, and umpire facilities.  Looking ahead, plans include a Field House for indoor sports, along with outdoor courts for tennis, pickleball, and basketball, providing year-round recreational opportunities.  The project also addresses infrastructure needs, with 850 parking spots planned (650 within the park), an extension of the Kelly Trail, and vital sewer line extensions to support anticipated growth.

Financial Considerations and Community Impact

The $3.186 million land investment reflects a strategy to recoup costs through increased sales and property tax revenue generated by the surrounding development.  This mixed-use approach aims to create a vibrant hub that enriches the lives of McCook residents. The project aligns with voter mandates, demonstrating a commitment to community priorities.

Community Input and Vision

Community feedback has been integral to shaping the vision for the sports complex.  Stakeholders have emphasized the need for expanded infrastructure, including housing and retail spaces, to support economic growth.  Suggestions for additional amenities, such as RV parking and a splash pad, reflect the community's desire for a multi-faceted facility that caters to diverse interests.

Timeline and Next Steps

Miller and Associates are developing the subdivision plan, with preliminary work expected by March and final plans by April.  E What kind of preliminary work is planned?  Drainage solutions and water management are prioritized to ensure the long-term functionality of the complex.

A Bright Future for McCook

The City of McCook's commitment to public engagement and community feedback underscores its dedication to inclusivity and collaboration. The envisioned sports complex holds immense promise, not only for enhancing local sports and recreation but also for invigorating the economy through tourism and an improved quality of life.  With continued stakeholder involvement and careful planning, this ambitious project is poised to become a valuable asset for the entire community
