The Shed Opens New Space on East 4th

McCOOK, Neb. — There’s a new reason to stop by East 4th Street this weekend — The Shed is opening its newly finished space, expanding the cozy McCook shop that’s become known for its mix of practical furniture, home décor, and unexpected finds.

Owned by Susan and Bob Ihrig, The Shed has quietly grown since opening last year, and the couple is now ready to open the doors to the large red building behind their home — adding more space and variety for shoppers to explore.

Located at 205 East 4th Street in McCook, The Shed will host the grand opening of its big red building on Saturday, November 1st. The shop will then expand its regular hours to Tuesday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., a change from the previous schedule.

After many years away, the Ihrigs moved back to McCook in 2020. “We both graduated in 1969 and met at McCook Junior College, where we attended on music scholarships. We’ve been together ever since,” Bob explained in an earlier interview. “In 1974, we left McCook to pursue our dreams and returned in 2020, right at the height of COVID.”

Although their business operates out of a house, the property is zoned for commercial use, allowing them to set up shop.

Inside, the new space feels familiar and comfortable — like stepping into a well-loved home where every piece has a story. Tables and chairs are paired with floral sofas, warm wood accents, and shelves of baskets, dishes, and wall art. Framed prints and paintings add color against the rustic metal walls, while handmade clocks, lamps, and vintage glassware give each corner its own charm.

Susan said the expansion has been months in the making, with plenty of cleaning, painting, and preparation before finally opening both spaces to the public. The addition now allows The Shed to showcase larger furniture pieces along with the smaller treasures customers have come to expect.

“We’re ready,” she said with a smile. “It’s exciting to have both buildings open and full.”

Since opening quietly in late 2024, The Shed has grown through word of mouth and repeat visitors. Over time, the shop has drawn people not only from McCook but from Kansas, Colorado, and even New York — all looking for affordable, gently used furniture and décor with personality.

The couple brings a spirit of care and connection into the shop, greeting visitors and sharing the stories behind the pieces on display. Bob summed it up best: “Yes, we’re still together after all these years — and she remains my best friend.”
