McCOOK, Neb. — A new consignment shop in downtown McCook is quickly becoming more than just a place to shop, it’s a space built on community, connection, and second chances.
The Style Exchange, owned by Jenna Morris, opened just over two weeks ago, bringing years of experience from selling clothing online through platforms like Poshmark and eBay. After spending 13 years as a stay-at-home mom, she said the decision to open a storefront came at the right time in life.
“I did this from my house for years,” Morris said. “Now my kids are older, and I was ready to step into something new.”
Behind the scenes, she said, she hasn’t done it alone.
“My husband is a huge part of this business,” Morris shared. “He’s the one who pushed me to keep going when I doubted it. He’s helped me stay late and come in early to keep up with inventory for our consignors.”
A Different Kind of Shopping Experience
While online resale has grown in popularity, Morris said having a physical storefront offers something people still crave.
“You can try things on, feel the quality, and really see what you’re getting,” she said.
The shop operates on a consignment model, allowing community members to bring in clothing and accessories to sell. Each item is tracked through a system that credits consignors when their items sell, giving them the option to cash out or use store credit.
“I tell my consignors, I work for you,” Morris said. “If I have all these consignors but no shoppers, I’m failing. But we’ve had a really good balance.”
That balance is already showing results. In just two and a half weeks, the shop has grown to 72 consignors, with many already seeing returns.
A Win-Win for the Community
Consignment shopping offers a unique benefit, supporting both a small business and a local individual at the same time.
“When you shop here, your money stays in the community,” Morris said. “You’re helping someone earn from items they no longer need.”
Some items move quickly, especially popular brands.
“Lululemon doesn’t last long,” she said with a laugh. “People come in specifically looking for it.”
Pricing is carefully considered, typically ranging from about 30% to 60% of retail value depending on brand and condition.
“It’s a balance,” Morris said. “I want it to sell for my consignors, but also be a good deal for shoppers.”
Support from the Community
One of the biggest surprises for Morris has been the level of encouragement from other local businesses.
“Other stores have been sending people my way,” she said. “That’s been really amazing.”
Located along Norris Avenue, The Style Exchange benefits from steady foot traffic, with many customers stopping in after visiting nearby businesses or grabbing lunch downtown.
“It’s been really encouraging,” Morris said. “People are showing up.”
Growing with Intention
While the shop offers a variety of items, Morris said it’s no surprise that most of the inventory leans toward women’s clothing.
“Women tend to refresh their closets more often,” she said, noting that many items come in new or gently worn.
The shop also carries a selection of men’s and children’s items, though in smaller quantities. One unexpected category gaining attention is books, which Morris said tend to move quickly off the shelves.
“It’s been fun to see what people are drawn to,” she said.
Looking ahead, she hopes to continue growing the business—and eventually bring on help.
“I’d love to be able to hire someone and create another opportunity for someone else,” she said.
The Style Exchange is located at 211 Norris Ave in McCook.
