McCOOK, Neb. — If you’ve stopped into Mint 217 lately, you may have noticed something a little different not just in the racks, but in the atmosphere.
That change starts with new owner Keatra Krause.
Since taking over the store in January, Krause has been balancing something many would find overwhelming: running a business, raising three children, and homeschooling, all while staying actively engaged online and in the community. But talking with her, it’s clear she wouldn’t have it any other way.
“I have a busy mind,” she said with a laugh. “So I enjoy keeping it busy.”
That mindset shows up everywhere—from how she runs the store to how she curates its style.
From Employee to Owner
Krause isn’t new to Mint 217. She worked in the store for several years before stepping into ownership, making the transition feel more natural than intimidating.
With support from the previous owner and her own familiarity with the business, the biggest adjustment hasn’t been the store, it’s been life.
“It’s more of a transition for my kids,” she shared. “They’re used to running out on the farm… now they’re here part of the day.”
That blend of farm life, motherhood, and entrepreneurship is part of what makes Krause’s approach so unique and so relatable.
A Store That Reflects Real Life
Mint 217 has always offered a variety of styles, but Krause is intentionally expanding that even further.
Her goal? To create a space where anyone can walk in and find something that feels like them.
“My style depends on the day,” she said. “Sometimes I’m more western, sometimes more business, sometimes more boho… I’m kind of a mix.”
That philosophy carries into the store itself. Instead of stocking large quantities of the same item, Krause focuses on bringing in unique pieces things that feel a little more personal and less mass-produced.
And for those who think a boutique might not be “their style,” she gently challenges that idea.
“If it fits you and you feel good in it, wear it,” she said.
Style Without Pressure
One of the most refreshing parts of Krause’s perspective is how she talks about clothing, not as something rigid or intimidating, but as something flexible and evolving.
“You don’t have to buy a whole wardrobe at once,” she explained. “Sometimes it’s just one piece… or even just an accessory that changes everything.”
That mindset takes the pressure off and makes style more accessible, something she clearly values.
She’s also added more accessories and giftable items to the shop, making it a place people can stop in for more than just clothing.
Building a Modern Small Business
While the storefront remains at the heart of Mint 217, Krause is also leaning into online sales and social media to reach customers who can’t always make it downtown during the day.
“I just want people to be able to see things online first,” she said. “Especially if they’re working and can’t get here right away.”
She’s active across Facebook, Instagram, and now TikTok-bringing a mix of styles, ideas, and personality to each platform.
It’s all part of growing the store while still maintaining balance, a challenge she’s navigating one day at a time.
Rooted in Community
Even as she finds her footing as a new business owner, Krause is already connecting with other downtown businesses, supporting events, and finding ways to collaborate.
That sense of community, something McCook is known for, is clearly important to her.
And it shows.
A Fresh Start for Spring
With warmer weather on the way, Krause is looking ahead to extended hours, new inventory, and a busy season downtown.
Spring, she says, is a time when people are ready for something new.
At Mint 217, that “something new” might be a different style, a new favorite piece, or just the confidence to be yourself.
And for Krause, that’s what it’s all about.

She shared, “After 6.5 years of owning Mint 217, it’s time for me to say goodbye as this chapter comes to an end and the store transitions to new ownership.
This business has been so much more than a storefront. It’s been years of growth, hard work, challenges, and relationships that I will always hold close. I’m incredibly grateful for the support, kindness, and loyalty from the community and customers who made Mint 217 what it is today.
As many of you know, I’m stepping into a beautiful new season of life with a baby on the way, and while this decision wasn’t easy, it’s the right time for me to shift my focus to my family.
The new owner has a passion for fashion and has a vision for the store, and I’m excited to watch her make it her own. I kindly ask for patience during this transition as it will take place at the end of the year. Please know that all existing gift cards will remain active and honored under the new ownership.
With that, I would love to introduce Keatra Krause as the new owner of Mint 217.”
