MEDC Improves Affordable Housing Options

McCOOK Neb. - Less than a year after breaking ground on the Townhomes at Parkview Addition, the McCook Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) celebrated notable progress with an open house for one of the new townhomes located on Cheyenne Road. This event marked an important milestone in MEDC's ongoing mission to improve affordable housing options within the community.The groundbreaking ceremony, held on December 14, 2023, attracted numerous community members who braved chilly temperatures to witness the commencement of this vital project. The development features two duplexes, each offering two-bedroom layouts, two baths, and two-stall garages, alongside a third duplex that includes three-bedroom units. Additionally, the site has provisions for three more duplexes, further enhancing the town's housing inventory.

In May 2023, MEDC received significant support from the Nebraska Department of Economic Development, which awarded $702,000 in Rural Workforce Housing Funds. The community came together to contribute a matching fund of $351,000, resulting in a total funding pool of $1,053,000. These funds build upon the earlier Rural Workforce Housing Grant awarded to MEDC in 2020, significantly enhancing the financial resources available for low-interest construction financing and enabling over $1.4 million in project funding that will benefit the local economy for years to come.

“McCook has strategically leveraged Rural Workforce Housing Funds to create beautiful, affordable housing options,” stated Kristi McClung, Western Housing Program Representative for the Nebraska Department of Economic Development. “This housing development, along with the new swimming pool, the YMCA’s capital campaign, and plans for a new sports complex, exemplifies the community’s commitment to growth. It’s inspiring to see all that is taking place.”

The new townhomes span 1,411 square feet and feature an open-concept living, kitchen, and dining area, granite countertops, vaulted ceilings, and options for two or three bedrooms. Each unit includes two bathrooms and a two-car garage, with both plans priced at $274,900.
