McCook, NE – The McCook Public Schools Board of Education convened this evening, hearing reports on a recent external evaluation, upcoming ELA material purchases, and a planned trip to Washington D.C.
External Evaluation Highlights District Strengths and Recommendations
Superintendent Grant Norgaard presented findings from an external evaluation conducted last month. A team of administrators and educators from neighboring districts assessed the school's progress toward its five-year improvement goals.

Central Elementary ELA Material Selection Underway
Central Elementary Principal Joel Bednar reported on the ongoing selection of English Language Arts (ELA) materials. The process, which began at the start of the year, involves extensive evaluation and consultation. Mr Norgaard informed the board that a significant purchase requiring their approval will be presented in the coming months.
Superintendent to Advocate for Education Policy in Washington D.C.
Superintendent Norgaard, along with Board President Brad Hays and Secretary Mike Langan, will visit Washington D.C. next week to discuss federal education policy. Norgaard aims to advocate for assessment practices that prioritize mastery of learning and critical thinking. He will also address teacher recruitment, school safety, achievement gaps, technology in education, and standardized testing.
Other Updates
The board received financial updates, including reports on meal services and general fund revenue and expenses. A financial workshop is scheduled for March 27. Facility updates include renovations at Central Elementary’s gym and ongoing YMCA construction. The 2025-2026 school calendar and a district-wide surplus sale were approved.
