McCook, NE – The first year of the Jobs for America’s Graduates (JAG) program at McCook High School is concluding, marking a year of significant growth and opportunity for its students. In a recent email to parents and guardians, JAG Career Specialist Meghan Giorgione celebrated the program's impactful inaugural year.

Giorgione expressed immense pride in the students' achievements, noting that the JAG group had developed into a supportive "family" through hard work and teamwork. A key focus of the program was exposing students to post-secondary education and career pathways. Throughout the year, students embarked on visits to various colleges, including NCTA–Curtis, Mid-Plains Community College in North Platte, Fort Hays Technical College, and Central Community College in Hastings. These visits provided valuable insights into life after high school and helped students consider their future goals.

The JAG program also prioritized connecting students with the local professional world. Students benefited from engagement with several area employers, including American Ag Lab, Valmont, Wagner Car Dealership, McCook Public Power, the Nebraska National Guard, the local Police Department, and an MCC College Recruiter. These interactions offered inspiring and educational glimpses into diverse career fields.

Beyond academics and career exploration, the JAG students actively contributed to their community. They volunteered their time to set up Christmas lights at Norris Park and worked with Hands of Heartland, fostering a sense of civic responsibility and community connection.

Leadership development was another cornerstone of the program. Students participated in the JAG Leadership Conference in Omaha and Legislative Day in Lincoln, gaining firsthand experience in advocacy and civic engagement.

Giorgione highlighted the strong bonds formed among the students, noting that many lasting friendships blossomed through classroom projects and shared experiences. She expressed gratitude to the parents for their trust and conveyed her excitement for the program's future, emphasizing the students' potential with continued support.

As the school year concludes, the first year of the JAG program at McCook High School stands as a testament to the positive impact of providing students with opportunities for exploration, growth, and connection.
