McCook Neb.abStarting in the 2026-27 school year, a new Nebraska law, LB 390, will require all school districts to publish online catalogs of their library books by building and provide parents with notifications. Sponsored by Senator Murman, the law aims to increase parental involvement by making students' reading materials transparent. While proponents believe it empowers parents, opponents like Senator Hunt worry about student privacy and potential harm to vulnerable youth. Superintendent Norgaard explained at a recent board meeting that McCook schools already have an online catalog but will need to develop a system for parents to see what their children are borrowing. Participation for parents will be voluntary. While McCook anticipates a relatively smooth implementation, other districts may face a bigger challenge in creating these systems within the year. Senator Murman emphasizes the law's goal is to enhance access, transparency, and communication between educators and parents regarding reading materials.
