City Council Update – Public Spaces & Camping Ordinance

McCook Neb. — At Monday night’s City Council meeting, council approved a new ordinance updating the City’s rules for camping, sleeping, and use of public spaces. The ordinance passed on second reading and has been under discussion since the temporary closure of Karrer Park in July 2025. It was not created in response to any single individual.

City officials emphasized that the ordinance is meant to regulate behavior — not housing status — and that it applies equally to anyone using public spaces.

The ordinance addresses:

– Camping and sleeping in public areas

– Sidewalk obstructions

– Personal property left in public spaces

– Appropriate use of public restrooms

– Use of Karrer Park going forward

🤍A personal note

The past few days have been difficult for me as a community reporter. I originally wasn’t planning to share a story about Britt, but felt emotionally compelled to do so. The response came from a very kind place, but it also highlighted how limited our local options are.

I don’t plan to provide individual updates beyond what was already shared with permission. What I can say is that well-intentioned efforts aren’t always practical or sustainable, which is why long-term systems and coordinated resources matter.

I did reach out to The Connection in North Platte, which currently has space available and offers both overnight shelter and daytime services such as meals and access to showers.

This is where I hope the focus can stay — on sustainable support and organizations doing this work every day.
