Whitaker's Furniture

A Story of Legacy, Laughter, and New Life
What could have been the end of a three-generation family business became the beginning of something unexpected and something special.
In 2026, Whitaker's Furniture celebrates 60 years in McCook. Owners, Jeff Whitaker and Terri Gray were recently named the McCook Chamber of Commerce Fourth Quarter Honor Our Business Award.
After the passing of Jeff’s father, Bill Whitaker, in June 2021, the future of the store was uncertain. Closing the doors was a real possibility. Instead, on July 1, 2021, Jeff and Terri stepped into a 50/50 partnership and into a new chapter.
And what a chapter it’s been.
If you’ve ever walked into Whitaker’s, you’ve likely experienced more than just furniture shopping. Jeff and Terri bring an energy that is equal parts hardworking, welcoming, and genuinely fun. Their back-and-forth feels effortless. They tease. They laugh. They finish each other’s thoughts. But underneath the humor is deep respect, for each other, for the business, and for the community that has supported it for six decades.
They didn’t just maintain a legacy they rolled up their sleeves and refreshed it. Remodeling, reimagining, and reinvesting in a business that has furnished homes in Southwest Nebraska for generations.
Sixty years is no small milestone. In small towns especially, businesses are more than storefronts they are part of family stories, first homes, growing families, and fresh starts.
Whitaker’s Furniture has been part of those moments for 60 years and thanks to Jeff and Terri, it continues with new life and plenty of laughter.
Congratulations on 60 years and on this well-earned recognition.
