McCook Neb. — The City of McCook is proud to announce that it has been awarded a Trees for Nebraska Towns grant from PlantNebraska, formerly known as the Nebraska Statewide Arboretum (NSA). This grant will provide 20 trees to be planted in Kelley Park, at the west city entrance and at the Barnett Park K-9 Corners Dog Park. These trees will enhance green spaces, improve community tree canopy, and promote environmental sustainability within McCook.
The Trees for Nebraska Towns program provides trees to Nebraska communities for planting in public spaces. The program focuses on improving community vitality through thoughtful landscaping, climate resilience, and long-term urban forestry planning. The following species of trees will be planted in McCook as part of this grant: Prairie Stature Oak, Heritage Oak, Urban Pinnacle Oak, Princeton Elm, Triumph Elm, Skyline Honeylocust Chinkapin Oak, Swamp White Oak, Spring Snow Crab Right Root, Fall Fiesta Maple, Flashfire Maple, Common Hackberry, Blue Spruce and Shumard Oak.
“We’re thrilled to receive this support from PlantNebraska,” said Public Works Director Kyle Potthoff. “These trees will not only beautify our community, but also provide shade, habitat, and environmental benefits for generations to come.”
