McCook Neb. - The McCook City manager provided an encouraging update on the highly anticipated Sports Complex project during a recent council meeting. The manager reported a productive series of discussions over the past few weeks, signaling that the project is progressing more rapidly than initially expected.

On January 8, city officials met with college representatives and sports construction firms for the first time, fostering a collaborative dialogue aimed at integrating educational institutions into the sports complex development. These conversations also included discussions with the Mammoth team and the Sports Complex Committee to assess the property's size dedicated to the project. Currently, the city envisions a 30-acre site, but there is potential for expansion to 40 acres based on committee feedback.

Following the initial meetings, city officials hosted a social gathering where further discussions took place regarding the subdivision process for the project. This process is set to begin soon, with Miller Associates working on the contractual details to be presented to the council for review. The proposed sports complex will merge seamlessly with the overall plans for the Walters property, which the city has acquired.

The council seeks to ensure that the sports complex accommodates a variety of amenities now and in the future. Civil engineers from Mammoth are currently revisiting the project design to incorporate an additional 10 acres, which might necessitate the removal of some residential lots but will ultimately enhance the space available for recreational facilities. Proposed features include outdoor basketball, pickleball, and tennis courts, as well as an indoor facility for year-round activities like soccer, football, and baseball.

“This is an exciting opportunity,” said Mayor Linda Taylor. “It’s moving quickly, and it’s going to be great for all the children.”

City officials are also actively pursuing grant opportunities and financing options through a variety of sources, including discussions with their bond underwriting firm. With grant applications due in mid-February, city leaders are prioritizing the funding strategies necessary to bring their vision to fruition.

A council member raised an important point regarding restroom facilities, suggesting a plan that would provide twice the number of women’s restrooms as men’s within the complex, ensuring accessibility and comfort for all users.

As discussions continue, city officials express optimism and the community eagerly awaits the completion of what promises to be a landmark addition to McCook, enhancing recreational opportunities for residents of all ages.
