Rotary and Norris House Partner to Unveil New Little Free Library

November 8, 2025

McCOOK, Neb. — A new Little Free Library was unveiled Saturday morning in front of the Senator George Norris House at 706 Norris Avenue — a collaboration between McCook’s Rotary Morning Companion Club and the Nebraska State Historical Society.

The project was made possible through a Rotary District Grant and represents the first major initiative of the Morning Companion Club, which meets at 6:30 a.m. on the third Thursday of each month at the CASA office (2nd Floor of 322 Norris Ave.)

Vincent Allen, who spoke on behalf of the club, said the idea grew from a desire to “identify the needs of our community and how we as Rotarians can provide for those needs.” He explained that the group wanted to contribute to McCook’s beautification efforts and create community destinations that encourage connection.

“We thought about different ideas, but we settled on our Little Free Library,” Allen said. “It’s more than just a place to borrow a book — it’s a symbol of partnership, collaboration, and community pride.”

Broc Anderson, Director of Historic Sites for the Nebraska State Historical Society, also spoke during the unveiling, highlighting the significance of hosting the library at the Norris House.

“Senator George Norris was an avid reader and author,” Anderson said. “In his autobiography, he described being ‘hungry for books,’ and that access to education and reading shaped the man who went on to serve Nebraska and the nation. This Little Free Library continues that legacy — promoting access, curiosity, and civic engagement.”

The Norris House, managed by Harold Callahan, is open Thursday through Saturday from 1:00–5:00 p.m. CT or by appointment. Admission is free.
