McCOOK Neb.- The Red Willow County Commissioners addressed the resignation of a Fair Board member and the appointment of a replacement, focusing on compliance with Nebraska statute 2-224, which limits city residency on the board to two members.

Commissioner Ted Gans explained that the board had three members residing within McCook's city limits, necessitating a change. Initially, Don Klein, one of the city residents, was considered for resignation, but he was hesitant. Newly appointed member Galen Perry then voluntarily resigned, allowing the board to comply with state law. The commissioners unanimously voted to rescind Perry's appointment.

Commissioner Dean raised concerns that past Fair Board decisions made during meetings violating the residency requirement could be voided, suggesting the County Attorney should review the matter.

Gans stated that several individuals expressed interest in the vacant position. However, Fair Board members preferred potential candidates to attend a meeting to understand the required commitment before recommendations were made.

Despite past practices of accepting Fair Board recommendations, Gans emphasized that the final appointment decision rested with the commissioners. He nominated Derek Myers for the position. After discussion regarding the vetting process and the importance of family support, Dean motioned to appoint Myers, which passed 3-2, with Commissioner Fritchie opposing.

Fair Board members expressed disappointment over the lack of collaborative input in the appointment process, marking a departure from previous practices. Fair Board President Jo Teter stated, "I would like it in the minutes that it is unprecedented for the first time ever, the commissioners are not going to allow the Fair Board to make a recommendation going forward of their future members. And this is the first time that this has happened. I don't think it's fair to the other people that said they wanted to be on but would be willing to serve, and the Fair Board didn't have a chance to ask any questions or have any input on any of this.”

This decision highlights the commissioners' efforts to ensure legal compliance and underscores a shift in the relationship between the Fair Board and the commissioners, emphasizing the need for clear communication and collaborative decision-making.

Other Meeting Business:

The commissioners also approved the consent agenda, including meeting minutes, accounts payable claims totaling $208,453.48, and various signatures. The Red Willow County treasurer provided an update on public tax sales, which totaled $175,000. The county clerk's monthly revenue report was $3,758.50.
