McCOOK Neb. - A recent Red Willow County Visitors Committee meeting exposed a rift between the McCook Chamber of Commerce and the Red Willow County Tourism Office regarding the promotion of the "Explore McCook" app, a joint project funded by both organizations.
Tensions flared as Chamber Director Sarah Schnieder voiced frustration over what she perceived as a lack of support from Tourism Director Carol Schlegel in promoting the app. Schnieder highlighted her significant personal investment in developing and promoting the app, including funding advertising campaigns and distributing promotional materials. She contrasted her efforts with the absence of app information on the Tourism website and social media. "I've been putting in nights, days, weekends, building this app... because I love this town," Schnieder stated, emphasizing her commitment.
Schlegel acknowledged Schnieder's contributions and expressed regret that her efforts were not adequately recognized. "I'm sorry you took it that way. That was not my intention," she responded.
Chairman Dan Stramel praised Schnieder's initiative, calling her "the best Chamber Director" he'd seen in his 40 years in McCook. He underscored the need for improved communication and collaboration between the two entities.
Despite the friction, both parties agreed on the app's potential to benefit the community and the importance of working together.
Beyond the App: Other Tourism Updates
The meeting also covered other tourism-related topics. Schlegel discussed refining the community branding initiative, the success of the marketing grant program, and the economic impact of tourism. She provided updates on the Nebraska Travel Conference's opposition to LB261, staff changes, and upcoming events like the Nebraska Life National Versatility Ranch Horse Association Finals and the Prairie Chicken Dance Tours.
The popular Prairie Chicken Dance Tours, which began in 2012, offer a unique opportunity to witness the mating rituals of prairie chickens. The 2025 tours run from next week through mid-April. Tickets are available at prairiechickendancetours.com.
