McCook Public Transit Welcomes New Bus, Continues Serving the Community

McCOOK, Neb. – For more than 50 years, McCook’s public transit system has quietly helped residents stay connected to the places and services they rely on. This dial-a-ride program, open to all ages, offers affordable, accessible transportation across the city for just $2 per ride.

On Monday night, the McCook City Council got a first look at the newest addition to the fleet—a Ford Transit bus that’s been six years in the making. Senior Services Director and Transit Manager Beth Siegfried shared that the new bus was fully funded through grants, meaning no cost to the city. Its arrival will help replace aging vehicles and ensure the service remains reliable.

The public transit program plays a vital role in the lives of McCook residents, helping people get to medical appointments, work, grocery stores, and social activities like lunch at the Heritage Senior Center. Riders range from seniors and individuals with disabilities to parents with young children and people who simply need a ride across town.

The service operates Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. within a 2.5-mile radius of McCook. The buses are equipped with wheelchair lifts or ramps, and assistance with packages (up to 30 pounds) is available upon request when booking. Car seats can be provided if needed, and caregivers ride free when assisting someone in a wheelchair.

Riders are encouraged to call ahead to schedule their trips by contacting the transit dispatcher at (308) 345-6098.
