McCook City Council to Consider Budget, Street Closures, and Employment Agreement

McCOOK, Neb. — The McCook City Council will meet Tuesday, Sept. 2, at 5:30 p.m. in the council chambers following a public hearing on the proposed 2025/2026 budget. The hearing allows residents to provide input before the council formally adopts the annual spending plan.


Immediately after the hearing, the council will convene its regular meeting, beginning with announcements and recognitions. A second hearing will follow to set the city’s final property tax request at an amount different from last year.


On the consent agenda, the council will:


  • Approve the minutes of the Aug. 18 meeting.

  • Adopt the 2025 Red Willow County Local Emergency Operations Plan.

  • Approve an agreement with J Bar J Landfill, Inc. (Waste Connections of Nebraska) for disposal of solid waste collected at the city’s transfer station.

  • Act on several requests for street closures and public events, including:


    • McCook Public Schools’ request to close Norris Avenue and “C” Street for homecoming festivities on Sept. 24.

    • St. Patrick Catholic Church’s request to close portions of East 4th, East “F,” and East “G” streets for its annual Fall Festival on Oct. 12.

    • Anytime Fitness’ request to host a Sept. 20 morning 5K run utilizing city streets and trails.

    • McCook Rotary Club’s request to host an inflatable costume relay race in Norris Park on Sept. 20 as part of Heritage Days.


  • Consider an application from Viaero Fiber Networks to install underground fiber optic cable and new ground-level vaults along West 4th Street from Highway 83 north to a communications tower.

  • Approve an updated employment agreement with City Manager Nathan A. Schneider for fiscal year 2025/2026.

  • Ratify several mayoral appointments, including seats on the Airport Advisory Commission, Board of Zoning Adjustment, Housing Agency Board, and Tree Advisory Board.



The regular agenda includes:


  • An update on the youth sports complex project.

  • Second readings of three ordinances related to the city budget, employee classification and pay plan, and amendments to water and sewer department rates and fees.

  • Council comments.

  • A potential executive session to discuss collective bargaining strategy with the McCook Professional Firefighters Association Local 2100.



The meeting is open to the public.
