McCook Neb. - The McCook Art Guild recently concluded a highly anticipated three-day painting workshop led by nationally recognized Nebraska artist, Todd A. Williams. Held on June 16, 17, and 18, 2025, at the McCook Art Guild on Norris Avenue, the immersive experience provided local artists and enthusiasts with a unique opportunity to learn from a master of his craft.
Todd Williams, known for his stunning works displayed in museums and sought by prominent collectors, guided participants through his "Finding Your Inner Voice" workshop. The class welcomed artists of all skill levels, from beginners to advanced, and those working with various mediums, though Todd primarily demonstrated in oils.
"It was kind of out of my comfort zone, but I learned a lot," commented one participant, highlighting the workshop's ability to challenge and expand artistic horizons. Another student expressed their enthusiasm, stating, "I'm not super familiar with [oils], so this was really good, because I've never had any formal training."
The workshop structure allowed for a comprehensive learning experience. On the first day, Todd delivered a lecture on the "7 keys to painting" and provided a live demonstration, offering invaluable insights into prepping the canvas, selecting, and mixing paint colors. "We all painted the same thing yesterday," Todd explained, referring to the initial guided session. Subsequent days allowed participants to explore their own subjects, with individual critiques and discussions providing personalized attention. Todd's flexible approach also accommodated those who could only attend part of the classes, ensuring everyone could benefit. "Some came just the first day, and then others just day one and two," he noted. "We kind of worked it out so if you missed the first day, we kind of catch you up and kind of keep going."
Participants universally praised Williams' teaching style. "He's very patient," one attendee remarked, while another added, "He's a good teacher." The atmosphere was one of focused learning and creative exploration.
Williams, a Central City native, shared his connection to Nebraska, referencing his monumental "Legacy of Nebraska" project, where he painted subjects from all 93 counties. Some of these works were also on display during his visit, allowing participants to see his renowned art firsthand.
The workshop, made possible with support from the McCook Arts Council, which provided scholarships to some individuals, perfectly aligned with the McCook Art Guild's mission to support local artists, offer arts education, and empower creativity in everyone.
As Todd Williams departs McCook, heading back to Central City, the impact of his workshop will undoubtedly resonate within the local art community. His presence brings new perspectives to the area. The McCook Art Guild continues to foster artistic growth and looks forward to future enriching opportunities for the community.
