Karrer Park Closed Temporarily Amid Safety Concerns

Updated: Jul 21

McCook, Neb. - Karrer Park, McCook’s free camping area located at 1628 East B Street, has been closed until further notice due to growing safety concerns. The closure, announced by the City of McCook, is not permanent but comes after repeated issues with misuse of the facility.

Public Works Director Kyle Potthoff said that while Karrer Park was designed for short stays, some individuals have been using the area as a permanent residence. “We have had a lot of abuse of the facility over the past few years, but this year it has gotten a lot worse,” Potthoff told McCook News Now.

City staff have also received calls from travelers who traditionally stop at Karrer Park but have now chosen other options because of concerning behavior at the site.

The City is working with the McCook Police Department to address issues not only at Karrer Park but also at Norris Park, particularly around the bandshell and restrooms. Residents are encouraged to report suspicious activity in any city park by calling the McCook Police Department at (308) 345-3450.

Updates on the park’s status will be shared with the public as the City evaluates next steps.
