From Flood Relief to Fair Fun: Josh Weathers Set to Perform in McCook

Updated: 3 days ago

McCOOK, Neb. — Texas musician Josh Weathers, who recently helped raise more than $500,000 for Central Texas flood victims, will bring his high-energy country-soul sound to the Red Willow County Fair this week.

Weathers spoke by phone Monday from Ingram, Texas, where he has been assisting flood victims.

“It looks like a third-world disaster area down here,” he said. “Everywhere I look, there’s debris piled up. I’ve never seen anything like it in my life.”

The Fort Worth-based singer-songwriter launched a livestream benefit earlier this month from his home church. Originally hoping to raise $150,000, he surpassed that goal within the first hour. CBS News reported that Texans donated $337,000 during the four-hour stream, with additional donations pushing the total past $500,000.

“Texans care about Texans,” Weathers said. “People really stepped up.”

A Global Mission

Weathers and his wife founded Love Like You Mean It, a nonprofit inspired by their experience adopting four of their six children. The organization funds schools and children’s programs in India and El Salvador, where Weathers and his family frequently travel.

“We wanted to do something meaningful with our lives,” he said. “Those kids are getting a world-class education in one of the poorest parts of the world.”

The nonprofit has expanded to provide emergency relief, including the current Texas flood response.

First Time in Nebraska

This will be Weathers’ first visit to Nebraska.

“We pray before every show that people leave with more life and joy than they came with,” he said. “There’s a lot going on in the world, so for that 90 minutes, we just want people to feel lighter.”

Describing his music as “a rock and roll band trapped in a honky-tonk band’s body,” Weathers said the set will include both original country-soul songs and familiar crowd favorites.

A former high school rodeo competitor, Weathers added that he’s excited to play in a community with strong Western roots.
