McCOOK, Neb. — From now until Wednesday, April 22, 2026, thousands of Western Nebraska residents have a rare power: the ability to choose who they buy their energy from. 

The annual Choice Gas Selection Period is officially underway, and while the mailers filling up local mailboxes might look like junk mail, officials say they are actually the key to controlling your utility budget for the next year.

The Breakdown: How It Works

It is a common misconception that switching gas providers means changing your service. In Nebraska’s Choice Gas program, the roles are split:

The Utility (Black Hills Energy): They own the pipes, read your meter, and respond to emergencies. This never changes. 

The Supplier (CNGP): These are the companies you see in your packet (like ACE, WoodRiver, or BHES). You are choosing which "store" to buy the gas from and at what price. 

The "Local" Factor: Is ACE Different?

As residents weigh their options, one name stands out for its unique structure. ACE (Public Alliance for Community Energy) remains the only not-for-profit, community-owned supplier in the program. 

Unlike private corporations that answer to out-of-state shareholders, ACE was formed by 75 Nebraska municipalities, including McCook, to keep energy dollars in the state. Since its inception, ACE has returned over $4.7 million to its member communities. These funds have been used locally for: 

• Upgrading community swimming pools. 

• Purchasing police and fire equipment. 

• Improving public parks and playground equipment.

Why You Shouldn't "Default"

If you don't make a selection by the April 22 deadline, you don't lose gas service, but you do lose your seat at the table. You will automatically "roll over" to your current supplier, but you will be assigned a price after the selection period ends. 

By actively choosing now, you can lock in a Fixed Rate to ensure your winter heating bill stays the same even if market prices spike, or opt for a Market Index price if you prefer to follow the current trends.
