McCOOK Neb. — The Red Willow County Board of Commissioners met three times in August, addressing budgets, agreements, and community questions. Here are the highlights:
August 11 Meeting
Commissioners approved accounts payable claims totaling $244,834.73.
Approved contracts with MIPS for JPH postcards and Applied Connective for cyber security services.
The Board of Equalization approved a motor vehicle exemption for Community Hospital (2025 Toyota Rav4) and a tax roll correction increasing tax rolls by $5,630.22.
Treasurer Crystal Dack reported on 59 distress warrants totaling more than $146,000, with 43 collected and 16 uncollected.
Commissioners hired Miller & Associates as the County Flood Plain Manager ($100/hour).
CPA Dan Miller presented preliminary budget figures.
August 19 Meeting
With no public comments, the board approved two requests:
A special liquor license for HoJo’s Hideaway.
An oversized load permit for Ward Craft Homes.
The remainder of the meeting focused on budget work.
August 25 Meeting
Citizens’ comments included questions about the county’s inheritance fund, concerns about homeless individuals at Norris Park, and increased traffic at the airport.
Commissioners approved a wide-ranging consent agenda, including:
Resolutions setting levies for local subdivisions.
Flood Plain Administrator agreement with Miller & Associates.
Reappointments to the Veterans’ Service Board.
Tractor lease for Kiplinger Arena.
Law enforcement agreement with the Village of Bartley.
Adoption of the 2025 Local Emergency Operating Plan.
Health Director Brandy Bird presented budget details, noting increases in vaccine and supply costs.
Commissioners also reviewed state permits and a child support enforcement agreement.
Approved claims totaled $617,549.38.
A quarterly jail inspection found everything in satisfactory condition.
Preview: September 8, 2025 Meeting
The board will meet Monday morning, September 8, beginning at 8:30 a.m.

Donald D. Wilson, CPA – Compliance attestation report.
Jiles Bowman, Fairboard Manager – Stall vacuum for Kiplinger Arena.
Discussion items include:
Reconsidering whether to join the West Central Nebraska Development District.
Reviewing roadway occupation fees.
Consent agenda highlights:
Interlocal law enforcement agreement with Bartley.
Rental agreement for Kiplinger Arena.
Great Plains Communications contracts.
Juvenile services contract.
Correspondence includes notice of a public hearing from the City of McCook regarding a special exception for bed & breakfasts. The District Court Clerk will also present the monthly revenue report.
