McCOOK, Neb. — The McCook City Council held a special noon meeting on September 10 to finalize agreements that set the course for the future of Ben Nelson Regional Airport. The actions clear the way for the McCook Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) to assume ownership of four hangar buildings while the City retains ownership of the land.
Council members approved two memorandums of understanding (MOUs). The first outlines MEDC’s role in acquiring the hangar assets, creating a new Airport Manager position, and establishing a supporting nonprofit organization to expand funding opportunities. The second covers a land lease arrangement, ensuring MEDC’s continued use of City property where the hangar buildings are located.
The agreements follow the 2024 bankruptcy of Red Willow Aviation, the airport’s former fixed-base operator, which left the City scrambling to provide fueling and hangar services. Under the new structure, MEDC will cover building acquisition costs and the Airport Manager position, while former aviation employees remain under contract to provide basic services during the transition.
Council members approved both measures unanimously, marking an important step toward restoring stability and preparing the airport for long-term growth.
