TRENTON Neb. - In the heart of rural America, where family farms meet the creative spirit, Emily O’Byrne stands out as a beacon of inspiration. Known for her engaging Facebook page, "House Wife in the Good Life," Emily has successfully blended the life of a stay-at-home mom with her passion for art and community engagement. Through her journey, she shares her artistic endeavors and fosters connections among local families, empowering them to find joy and creativity in everyday life.
Emily's story began modestly: She shared recipes in a monthly article in her local paper, which she shared on her Facebook platform. What started as a simple outreach blossomed into a vibrant online community. "I just kept adding more and posting more," she reflects, revealing her natural progression from writer to artist and entrepreneur. With over 1,000 followers on her Facebook page, Emily is excited to have cultivated a space where people can share ideas and support each other.
In addition to her writing, Emily has ventured into the world of painting, hosting parties that focus on creativity and self-expression, especially for children. Emily believes in giving participants the least guidance possible, allowing their individuality to shine through each creation. “It’s more fun to let your creativity blossom,” she shares, emphasizing her belief that art should be an enjoyable experience for everyone involved.
Emily is constantly exploring new avenues. She dreams of organizing more events, like retreats and workshops, that bring together local entrepreneurs and creatives. She hosted a successful retreat, Pride of the Prairie, at the Stratton Lake View Lodge two years ago, drawing nearly 30 attendees. It highlighted a variety of speakers from different sectors, focusing on topics that resonate with women in agriculture and rural areas, such as mental health and sustainable practices.
The challenges of balancing her growing business with family life have been significant, especially considering her past experiences. Emily candidly discusses her struggles with postpartum depression following the birth of her daughters, particularly after the loss of her son, Randall John. “It was an incredibly hard time… I turned into a hermit,” she admits showing her vulnerability. However, through therapy and support, she persevered, working to emerge stronger and more resilient.
Emily’s home is not just her business base; it is where she raises her daughters. Her husband, Hugh, manages the family feedlot, while Emily finds joy in both farm life and managing their family's needs. In her words, "Every day is different." She revels in the opportunity to involve her children in ranch activities—from helping with cattle to caring for their chickens—instilling a sense of responsibility and teamwork.
The community aspect of her work extends into her parenting approach as well. “I want my kids to have exposure to other children,” she explains, motivated by the desire to create a rich social environment for her daughters. Emily's passion for teaching continues to shine through her efforts to organize workshops for local youth, encouraging them to explore their creativity without fearing imperfection.
With big dreams on the horizon, Emily is contemplating future expansions, including possibly establishing a studio space in McCook with Miranda Perry of Wild Sorrel Designs, who cuts and supplies the blanks she uses for her paint parties. Their collaborative vision is to create a nurturing environment where creativity can flourish.
Additionally, Emily plans to integrate her art background more deeply into her community initiatives. Her experiences as an art teacher in various Nebraska schools have equipped her with skills and insight, she is eager to share. “I’m really good at idea generation,” she notes, a trait that she hopes to leverage as she designs workshops that cater to children's 4-H projects and other creative pursuits.
Emily O’Byrne represents the essence of resilience and creativity in today’s fast-paced world. Combining her roles as an artist, mother, and community builder reflects the incredible journey of many women who balance personal aspirations with family responsibilities. As she continues to foster creativity and connection through her work, Emily embodies the spirit of the modern homemaker—living the good life while inspiring others to do the same.
