Back-to-School Support: Annual Backpack & School Supply Giveaway Returns

Updated: Aug 7

McCOOK, Neb. — Local families can get a head start on the new school year at the Annual Backpack/School Supply Giveaway & Resource Fair on Wednesday, August 6, from 3:00–6:00 p.m. at McCook Christian Church, 507 West B Street.

The event, open to students in grades K–8, provides free backpacks filled with essential school supplies — no income guidelines, paperwork, or ID required. Families simply check in and let volunteers know what grade each child is entering.

Organizers expect to serve more than the 280 children, matching or exceeding last year’s total. “We know families are hurting more this year,” said organizers. “We want anyone who needs help to feel welcome to come.”

The Salvation Army provided $4,000 in funding for supplies through its annual bell-ringing campaign, along with additional donations from individuals, local churches, and businesses, including $250 each from MNB and Thrivent. Volunteers will guide families through supply tables to ensure each child receives what they need based on local school lists. One of the event organizers, shared that MNB Insurance was also a generous donor.

The event has expanded in recent years to include a resource fair, where families can connect with local agencies, receive giveaways, and even access free services. This year’s offerings include:

  • Haircuts from Aphrodite Salon (attendees must visit at least four booths to qualify)

  • Dental kits and health resources

  • Immunizations from Red Willow County Health Department

  • Information booths from area organizations

The Nebraska Total Care mobile dental van will also be on-site, offering free dental screenings, fluoride treatments, sealants, and consultations. Two dentists will be available to serve as many patients as possible during the day.

Organizers say the goal is to make the event an experience rather than just a quick pick-up. “It’s about getting kids excited and ready for school, and connecting families with resources they might not know about,” they said.
